ROUTE 02 / MATERIALS

Material is a maintenance decision

Substrate, finish, edge, fastening and exposure operate as one assembly. Compare systems by environment and service plan, not appearance alone.

Painted wood systems

Wood offers warmth and workable detail, but species, grain orientation, sealing, edge treatment, fasteners, moisture cycling and repaint access matter. Ask for a coating schedule and clarify which surfaces receive finish.

B

Engineered sign board

High-density urethane and other engineered boards can support dimensional carving without wood grain movement. Density, impact exposure, fastening inserts, edge protection and coating compatibility still require specification.

C

Aluminum and composites

Sheet aluminum, extrusions and aluminum composite material are common because they are light and stable. Panel thickness, core, edge exposure, thermal movement, isolation from dissimilar metals and mounting design affect performance.

D

Dimensional letters

Metal, acrylic and formed letters introduce depth, shadow and mounting complexity. Confirm returns, backs, seams, drain paths, stand-offs, templates and access for replacement.

Films and printed graphics

Adhesive films vary by durability, conformability, removability, color and print system. Surface preparation, temperature, outgassing and installer technique can matter as much as the film family.

Light and electrical parts

Illumination adds visibility but also wiring, power supplies, heat, sealing, access, listing requirements and service intervals. Coordinate qualified electrical work and local approval.
